An introduction-only Italian hideaway in Jingumae, where a chef with no menu cooks whatever you request.
Tucked into the basement of the Hills Aoyama building in Jingumae, 5 1/2 Cinque Mezzo is a fully reservation-only, introduction-based Italian restaurant that deliberately keeps its address and phone number private. It was opened in the summer of 2021 by chef Yo Hagari, formerly of the respected Appia, together with manager Teruaki Ogata, who spent years as the manager of Canty Higashi-Azabu. The two were school friends and former colleagues at Canty, and the restaurant's name plays on the Italian for "five and a half", a pun on gohan, the Japanese word for a meal. It was selected for GOETHE magazine's Goetaste 2025 guide by Kundo Koyama, who praised its quietly devoted approach. The most distinctive feature is that there is effectively no written menu: around forty types of antipasti arrive on a wagon for guests to choose from, including house-smoked salmon, caviar and simmered abalone, and the chef will then cook almost anything on request. Signature dishes include the paglico, a garlicky butter sauce incorporating coriander rather than the usual basil and parsley, and a French veal T-bone steak finished in lemon butter, with desserts also presented from a wagon. Seating is intimate and deliberately small, with four counter seats facing the kitchen, three tables and a single private room, and the carefully selected wines are chosen by Ogata to complement the cooking. With a typical budget in the region of 30,000 yen per person, it is a destination for a special, unhurried evening rather than a casual drop-in. For diners able to secure an introduction, Cinque Mezzo offers one of Jingumae's most personal and theatrical Italian meals, where the absence of a menu is the point. Arrive curious, tell the chef what you love, and let the wagon and the kitchen decide the rest.Operating Hours
